Paper-making 101: Fluorinated chemicals in fiber-based food packaging

The use of fluorinated chemicals as a grease and moisture barrier in food packaging has raised concerns about another potential route of human exposure to PFAS. On Tuesday, October 24, 2017, Zack Leimkuehler of Expera Specialty Solutions presented a "Paper-making 101" webinar. Zack described the paper-making process generally and discussed some of the sustainability issues and trade-offs Expera faced as they developed an array of paper products, including PFAS-free, unbleached, FSC-certified, and post-consumer recycled fiber. Zack also explained the difference between molded fiber products and paper products and described the links in the supply chain—from material sourcing to finished consumer product.
